Judo Olympic LogoFarrell's U.S. Martial Arts is now home to the Des Moines Judo Academy.

Judo is a Japanese martial art that is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques but also has many grappling moves for ground utilization. A few of these are: specialized pins, control holds, arm locks and different types of choking techniques.  Similar to our Taekwondo programs, Judo is all inclusive and all ages, both sexes, and most disabled persons can participate together in learning and practicing the sport.

Bret Parkhill


The head instructor for our Judo program is Bret Parkhill.

Mr. Parkhill has been involved in the sport of Judo for 26 years. He began his Judo training in Norman, Oklahoma under the coaching of 1972 & 1976 Judo Olympian, Patrick Burris. He was an active competitor up until 2008, winning many regional and state competitions. He now devotes himself to coaching others and has been coaching Judo continuously in Des Moines since 1992.
